Book review 2016

Here are the book recommended for learning about IOT:

IOT is a big field. It goes from embedded devices to fundamental wireless technologies to M2M. I’ll try to break down the book recommendations based on what you’re interested in.

Also, I am trying to keep the list short, aiming for quality over quantity. I have read (multiple times) all the book here. They are definitely worth your hard-earned investment dollars. Here are the criteria I used when reviewing the books:

  • Value (is the book affordable?)
  • Am I going to read this book again? So many books are so technology dependent that after 6 months they are obsolete. I am not looking for “How-to” books.
  • Breath and depth of the content.

Embedded design:

Book sections related to embedded design with wireless.

Getting-Started-Bluetooth-Low-Energy

Level : Beginner

This is a great book about bluetooth. It starts from the basic and helps you get started prototyping a BT connected device.

Wireless Technologies:

Books related to communication theory.

Beginner:

Beginning-NFC-Communication-Arduino-PhoneGap

This is a great book to learn about NFC. I would say that Phonegap is probably a bit outdated, but the NFC part is a very good introduction.

Next Generation Wireless LANs: 802.11n and 802.11ac

Level : Intermediate to Advanced:

If there is 1 book I would recommend for WLAN, this is it. This book is written by Perahia & Stacey and both have been working on the 802.11 standard for a long time. This goes in very good detail of the PHY and MAC design.

Wireless communications

Level : Advanced

This is a great book to get a deep-dive into communication technologies. It is a graduate class textbook, so heavy on math. But all the concepts are well explained and overall relatively easy to read.

Disclamer: I attended Andrea Goldsmith’s class, so I did spend a lot of time reading it multiple times.

Yet to find books:

I have yet to find a good book detailing Bluetooth technology.

If you know a book you want to recommend please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to review and if it makes it, add it to the list.
